Filed under: Release Announcements, WP-United Development — Jhong at 2:39 pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007

This is a small but important update to fix the following issues:

  • When there are no bloggers, the blog home page does not display correctly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have been running the mod with user integration turned on, you MUST perform the following steps. (More…)

Doing it backwards: phpBB in WordPress

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 2:44 pm on Monday, February 26, 2007

A popular request has been a “reverse” template integration – having phpBB appearing inside the WordPress header and footer. (Much like this site looks to the untrained eye – although WP-United.com actually uses a phpBB header and footer on every page).

Well – it’s in alpha and on its way to being released. the package will allow you to choose whether you just want the forum inside the WordPress header and footer, or inside a WordPress template page. (You could even put an entire WordPress install inside a single blog post if you so desire).

And, of course, it’s a full template integration – no iframes or any of that jazz!

Here are some obligatory screenshots:

v0.8.9.0 (still) coming soon!

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 4:57 am on Thursday, February 22, 2007

OK, v0.8.9.0 is iminent…. still a bit of cleaning up to do, but it should be out within the next 24 – 48 hours.

Due to time constraints, and the sheer volume of other features/fixes included, I have had to drop per-user categoris and blogroll for this release — they will be coming soon!

New WP-United Release, New Features!

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 1:40 am on Saturday, February 17, 2007

v0.8.9 is just around the corner, and will bring several improvements.

Most important of these is a nice, automatically-generated front page, listing users’ blogs and various details. Second on the list is per-user categories. A few new template tags to allow phpBB avatars are also available (check out the comments in this blog for a preview!). (More…)

Community Blogging

Filed under: Community Blogging — Jhong at 1:46 pm on Thursday, February 15, 2007

Community blogging is nothing new… at least not when compared with the timescale of the existence of the “blogoshphere”. But its potential has yet to be fully tapped.

Community Blogging” means different things to different people. Some are concerned with the natural emergence of communities in a sea of otherwise discrete and disparate blogs. The proliferation of bookmarking and social networking sites are testament to this phenomenon. Others see community blogs as location-based groupings of people. Witness the rise of the “ists”.

However, it is a third, more expansive definition that interests me the most: leveraging an existing online community to create a blogging platform with an instant audience. (More…)

WP-United v0.8.8.7 released!

Filed under: Release Announcements — Jhong at 12:05 am on Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Changes in this release:

  • FIXED: WP-United Connection now installs properly when PHP is running under IIS
  • Better and more reliable handling of embedded RSS feeds in an integrated page
  • Better auto-setting of page basename
  • FIXED: Trailing slash after blog.php no longer causes a 404 error when permalinks are turned on
  • Improved detection of WordPress styles and scripts that need to be included in an integrated page
  • Superfluous full-stop removed from mod file (thanks Georgie!)

I recommend that anyone running WP-United upgrade. If you;re runnng v0.8.8.x, the process is simple, just copy over the new files.

There is also one minor change in the mod file to overall_header.tpl (change {WP_STYLES} to {WP_HEAD} ), but this change will not become necessary until v0.9.x – both are currently supported.

Hopefully this will be the last of the bugs cleared up in advance of the v0.8.9 release, which will have many new features!

You can download WP-United v0.8.8.7 on the Download Page.

Happy Community Blogging!
