I am — finally — putting the finishing touches on WP-United v0.6.5. This new official release will be compatible with WordPress 2.7 and 2.8 (and all older versions!), and will fix a few known issues.
I hope to have it released before WP 2.8 goes final.

I am very happy for your returns!
I am one of the developers (if I can define myself as a developer 
) of the unofficial version of WP-United (v0.6.1).
After the v0.6.1 I continued to work on the project, in my free time.
I have developed new small features and some fixes for a new version of WP-United (for an eventual unofficial v0.6.2).
This includes the avatar fix, the user profile link fix, the italian translation, the censor text and smilies for the wordpress comments and other minor fix!
I’m releasing the 0.6.2 …
When I release it I will give you a link to download it.

All your changes sound great. I’ve sent you the relevant details. so we can work on the same code base.
This is the WPU 0.6.5 changelog (over the 0.6.1 version) so far. They are mostly minor bug-fixes and compatibility improvements:
– WP 2.3 – 2.8 compatibility
– login integration bugs fixed: Will log in users properly according to the new authentication functions in WP 2.5. Improved translation of passwords between phpBB3 & WordPress
– bug fix: latest posts widget doesn’t work when WP and phpBB are in separate databases
– bug fix: path detector in the Install Wizard sometimes suggests paths with double slashes (// or \\)
– WP-United installation wizard: Now tries to automatically copy wpu-plugin.php to the correct place. If it can’t it informs the user of what they need to do
– Cross-posting: Only show the cross posting box heading if cross posting is enabled and the user has forums they’re allowed to post to. Otherwise, show nothing.
– Login: Access to wp-login.php is disabled automatically if user integration is enabled (users are redirected to phpBB login).
– Bug fix: “Call to undefined function WPU_Integration::fix_template_funcs”
– Debugging improved when turned on in options.php. It should now always show when needed.
– Caching improved — should now automatically clear WP-United cache when WordPress is upgraded (this causes lots of support requests).
– Improved display of WP-United options in WP admin panel. Still some work to do for per-user blogs.
– Packaging and MODX files updated to comply with new phpBB guidelines
