Site upgraded

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 7:06 pm on Monday, May 18, 2009

I’ve just upgraded the site — at long last — to WordPress 2.7.1, latest phpBB3, and latest WP-United.

EDIT: It was such a long time since we cleaned ship, some of the phpBB files had crusted over, preventing some users from being able to log in — after a bit of spring cleaning this morning, things are back to normal!

This also allowed me to iron out a few final issues with the about-to-be-released WP-United v0.6.5. We should be close to a release soon.

WP-United v0.6.5 coming soon!

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 7:32 pm on Sunday, May 17, 2009

I am — finally — putting the finishing touches on WP-United v0.6.5. This new official release will be compatible with WordPress 2.7 and 2.8 (and all older versions!), and will fix a few known issues.

I hope to have it released before WP 2.8 goes final.

if you would like to test it in advance of the release, please post here.

What’s happened to WP-United?

WP-United lives on thanks to you

Many apologies for not posting here for such a long time. WP-United development has been stalled for the past year while I have had to attend with personal life — a new job, and more recently, the financial crisis.

The current version of WP-United up on the download page here is out of date — it will need a few changes in order to work with the latest versions of phpBB3 and WordPress. The good news is that, thanks to the power of open source, and resourceful users, WP-United lives on!

You can find the latest version of WP-United here at nitemarecafe.com.

Help needed!

I apologise for not being able to answer support questions on the forum. However, I would like this site to continue as a useful resource, and intend to return to active WP-United maintenance, provided I have some help.

WP-United is big enough to warrant being managed and developed as a community, so, in the meantime, I am looking for:

  • Developers — If you have been keeping WP-united up-to-date yourselves, I would like to have your patches submitted against the WP-United SVN tree here. Please contact me for commit privileges.
  • One or two forum moderators — people who are already active on the forums, and would enjoy helping people out where necessary. These people could also field their own support/installation services if they wanted to, via the support section of this site. Even though I can’t visit as often as I would like, I hope that they can still facilitate support and user interaction.

If you are able to help in either of the above roles, please post in the comments to this blog post.

Server move

Finally, in order to keep this site alive, I will be migrating it to a new server in the coming days. For a short period, the blog and forums will be locked, to ensure the process goes smoothly. Everything, including the URL, will be the same after the move.

[Update: The server move is now complete -- if you are reading this update, then welcome to the new server! If you spot any problems, please add a comment to this blog entry]

Happy blogging!

New update for phpBB RC7

Filed under: Release Announcements, WP-United Development, phpBB3 — Jhong at 4:04 am on Monday, November 26, 2007

Sorry for the delay with this one — work has been busy (and interesting), leaving me less time and energy in the evenings to focus my attention on WP-United.

I’ve also been a little weary of the sheer number of RC releases for phpBB — I was a proponent of another beta release prior to going RC, and you can see why! Each release has required a fair few template changes — which, on my sites with customised themes, means a lot of time wasted updating software when I’d rather be programming!

Anyway — since phpBB3 RC7 seems relatively stable, I have prepared another interim release, updated to install with phpBB3 RC7. As previously, if all is OK, I shall release this as a new version in the coming days.

Download it here: V0.6 Preview

WP-United v0.6.0 Preview Now Available

Filed under: WP-United Development — Jhong at 2:01 am on Friday, September 28, 2007

After a long time sorting everything out — not least having to recreate a decent test environment due to my relocation, and then dealing with the multiple updates of phpBB3 & WordPress, I should be back on track for releasing v0.6.0

In the meantime I have released a preview version here — for those waiting for the new release, you can test it out and post any problems on the forums.

Update 1/10/07: The preview download has been updated (x2) to improve cross-posting handling and WP 2.3 compatibility.

Still here!

Sorry for the lack of updates for the past couple of weeks, and the minimal participation in the forums — I have been in th e midst of a temporary relocation. If all goes according to plan, you should be seing a lot more of me in the coming week :-)

Upcoming : v0.6 for phpBB3, and (possibly) RC for phpBB2

Filed under: WP-United Development, phpBB3 — Jhong at 10:24 am on Wednesday, August 8, 2007

Busy, busy these days — very little time to devote to WP-United. However, I have made some progress with the next version.

First up is a new feature that many have been waiting for: Cross-posting.

If you enable this feature, you will find a new box on the WordPress “Write Post” page. Here, you can select whether you want to “cross-post”, and select a forum to cross-post to. When you submit the post, a topic will be created in that forum. The topic will be an excerpt of your blog post (or the full post, if you did not specify an excerpt, or did not use the “more” tags), complete with HTML converted to BBCode, a list of categories it was posted to, and a link back to the full post. The topic title can be automatically prefixed with text (say, “[BLOG]“).

WP-United for phpBB3: Release imminent!

Filed under: Community Blogging, WP-United Development, phpBB3 — Jhong at 6:03 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Only a couple of more evenings of work are needed (touch wood!) on WP-United for phpBB3.

We’re getting pretty close, and it’s looking pretty good :-)

For the initial release, I have tried to maintain feature parity with the phpBB2 version as far as possible. However, there will be a few differences — some by necessity, and a few improvements thrown in along the way. Here are the main ones: (More…)

Second phpBB3 Example Site Up!

Filed under: Example Integrations, WP-United Development, phpBB3 — Jhong at 3:16 pm on Monday, July 9, 2007

The second WP-United site for phpBB3 is finally up. Can you guess which one it is? (Hint: You’re on it!).

While I uncovered a number of minor bugs during the upgrade that I will need to fix, none of them are show-stoppers, which means that I should be able to package and release WP-United for phpBB3 soon.

This site is a bit more ‘integrated’ than the last example: Users are integrated, and we use several template tags. So far so good (although I need to clean up the template and fix a few fonts here and there).

There are a few things outstanding: A bit more work on the installer, admin panel, and widgets, a bit of cleaning up to do, plus a bit of CSS for default template integrations. Nothing too major left I hope.

So stay tuned…. :-)

Sorry for being a bit ‘hands off’ the last week — had a long weekend in Hong Kong, but managed to get in a spot of work on WP-United for phpBB3. (More…)
