WP-United: The phpBB - WordPress Integration Package

WP-United is a new integration package that glues together phpBB, the leading open source bulletin board, and WordPress, the popular blogging tool.

WP-United is for phpBB users who want to integrate WordPress into an existing community — perhaps using it as a content management system for articles, perhaps to offer their members personal blogs, or perhaps as a portal page. The choice is yours!

WP-United ties WordPress to a phpBB community, with login to WordPress (optionally) handled automatically by the integration package.

WP-United v0.5.0 for phpBB3 released!

Filed under: phpBB3, Release Announcements — Jhong at 4:09 am on Sunday, July 15, 2007

At last — the first public release of WP-United for phpBB3!

(And yes, as promised, it hit the streets before phpBB3 went final!)

While users migrating from the phpBB2 version will find mostly the same features, several enhancements have been made — particularly to the install & uninstall process. There are also numerous bugfixes, and several features, such as CSS ordering and DTD switching have been enhanced.

Over the coming days the forum will be expanded to accommodate phpBB3 requests & information.

There’s not much more to say, other than: Head on over to the Download Page!

Happy blogging! :-)

WP-United for phpBB3: Release imminent!

Filed under: WP-United Development, Community Blogging, phpBB3 — Jhong at 6:03 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Only a couple of more evenings of work are needed (touch wood!) on WP-United for phpBB3.

We’re getting pretty close, and it’s looking pretty good :-)

For the initial release, I have tried to maintain feature parity with the phpBB2 version as far as possible. However, there will be a few differences — some by necessity, and a few improvements thrown in along the way. Here are the main ones: (More…)

Second phpBB3 Example Site Up!

Filed under: Example Integrations, WP-United Development, phpBB3 — Jhong at 3:16 pm on Monday, July 9, 2007

The second WP-United site for phpBB3 is finally up. Can you guess which one it is? (Hint: You’re on it!).

While I uncovered a number of minor bugs during the upgrade that I will need to fix, none of them are show-stoppers, which means that I should be able to package and release WP-United for phpBB3 soon.

This site is a bit more ‘integrated’ than the last example: Users are integrated, and we use several template tags. So far so good (although I need to clean up the template and fix a few fonts here and there).

There are a few things outstanding: A bit more work on the installer, admin panel, and widgets, a bit of cleaning up to do, plus a bit of CSS for default template integrations. Nothing too major left I hope.

So stay tuned…. :-)

Sorry for being a bit ‘hands off’ the last week — had a long weekend in Hong Kong, but managed to get in a spot of work on WP-United for phpBB3. (More…)

Getting there…

More progress…

The majority of the code is now working well with phpBB3.

I’m using the phpBB3 native permissions system to integrate logins without any problems.Template integration are completed.

And… the beginnings of an ACP interface are beginning to emerge…

WP-United v0.9.5.0 released!

Filed under: Release Announcements — Jhong at 7:29 pm on Monday, June 4, 2007

This marks the last major changes to the phpBB2 codebase before a unified phpBB2 & phpBB3 release.

For this release, I tried to focus on “polish” — killing several bugs, while hopefully not adding too many new ones. However, there are several exciting new features as well! In fact, the only outstanding major feature still on the list is category and blogroll separation for user blogs.

WordPress 2.2 users, SVN users.

Filed under: WordPress, WP-United Development — Jhong at 7:21 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2007

If you’re using WordPress 2.2, you’ll want a version of WP-United that is compatible. that means the development version, which you can grab from the SVN repository at http://svn.wp-united.org using your favourite SVN client.

Please note that if you do decide to use this code, it is changing rapidly, so be sure to check for changes often, including changes to the mod upgrade file.

For those who have already been making use of the SVN code, the version has just been bumped up to v0.9.5 in preparation for the next release. You’ll need to look at the upgrade mod file if you’ve been using v0.9.2.

If you’re a phpBB3 user, you’ll see phpBB3 code in there, but it is not currently supported (and will not work as you expect)… best to leave it for a few days.

Gallery Up!

I’ve finally found enough time to put up the Gallery page. This page features all the best WP-United integrations. There are some really great sites in there, so if you’re looking for inspiration, be sure to check it out!

To get your site into the gallery, simply post a link in the Gallery forum. Links back to WP-United are much appreciated — it’s the main way we can spread the word!

Time…

I’ve been suffering from a shortage of time recently. Sorry for not being terribly active on the forums — and I know I have 5 Private Messages I’ve promised to answer. I will get round to you, I promise. (More…)
